The Lovegrove family

I was referred when Jade (now 4) was 10 months old as I was still feeding her two or three times overnight, and the child and family midwife saw that I was tired and exhausted. I was not aware at that stage that you could stop the night feeds and so didn’t think I could do anything. I learnt how to ‘control cry’ her at the Family Care Centre and after spending a whole day there I went home and explained the procedures to my husband and that night we started. That first night she cried for 2.5 hours, the second night 10 minutes and the third night 10 mins… then never again did she cry for a feed. She has slept through ever since. Wow!! It was so wonderful!

Initially I sought out the service and asked for a referral as Isabelle (now 10 months) was having some attachment problems. I had a half day visit and learnt some invaluable tips. With those sorted out, I once again rang the service later on as she was only sleeping for 45 minute intervals through the day. I had a day visit where I was taught that you could resettle your baby and that they should be encouraged to do so when only sleeping through one ‘sleep cycle’.

Learning these techniques was easy… having their support was very good. Actually, I probably relied too much on them teaching me – I probably could have done it at home but at that point you are tired, exhausted, at the risk of post natal depression, and just desiring an understanding and supportive person to talk to. I have found such people at the FCC and have the utmost respect for these people. They have given me the encouragement and fostered the confidence that I can be a good mother and do the best for my children that I possible can.

I have learnt different things for both my daughters. I am trying for number 3 and I know they too will have their own personality and challenges and I would like to think I could call on this service again when I need it.
